    Numerical investigation of the performance of an SPR-based optical fiber sensor in an aqueous environment using finite-difference time domain

    We investigate a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based optical fiber sensor using 2-D finite-difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. The optical sensor is designed by polishing a single-mode optical fiber by symmetrically removing a portion of its cladding forming two sensing regions. We analyze the effects of two physical parameters of the sensor in an aqueous medium, i.e. the thickness of the metal layer and the amount of residual cladding using numerical simulations. The results show that a good transmission dip can be obtained by optimizing these parameters. Thus, the sensor structure can be deployed as an optical biosensor in aqueous environments

    Design and Development of a portable Pulse Oximetry system

    Heart is the most important part in human body. Thus, it is important to follow-up and monitor its condition. Heart rate (HR) and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) are important indicators directly related to heart-pulmonary system. Monitoring of HR and SpO2 offers us a good indication of heart functionality. Therefore, it is crucial to design and develop a homemade inexpensive device for measuring HR and SpO2. Pulse Oximeter (PO) is an opto-electronic non-invasive medical instrument capable of measuring and recording the changes of HR and SpO2 at the finger tip. In this paper we will demonstrate the overall process involved in the development of a portable (PO) system which can be used for health condition monitoring or for educational and research purposes

    MEH-PPV film thickness influenced fluorescent quenching of tip-coated plastic optical fiber sensors

    The performance of plastic optical fiber sensors in detecting nitro aromatic explosives 1,4-dinitrobenzene (DNB) have been investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and analyzed by using fluorescence quenching technique. The plastic optical fiber utilized is 90 degrees cut tip and dip-coated with conjugated polymer MEH-PPV poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] thin films for detection conjugants. The thicknesses of the MEH-PPV coating were varied to improvise the sensitivity whilst slowly reducing the fluorescence intensity. It was shown that fluorescence intensity from thinner film decreased by (82% in 40 s) in the presence of DNB signifying an improvement of 28% reduction with time 13 s less than that of the thicker film

    Survey on replication techniques for distributed system

    Distributed systems mainly provide access to a large amount of data and computational resources through a wide range of interfaces. Besides its dynamic nature, which means that resources may enter and leave the environment at any time, many distributed systems applications will be running in an environment where faults are more likely to occur due to their ever-increasing scales and the complexity. Due to diverse faults and failures conditions, fault tolerance has become a critical element for distributed computing in order for the system to perform its function correctly even in the present of faults. Replication techniques primarily concentrate on the two fault tolerance manners precisely masking the failures as well as reconfigure the system in response. This paper presents a brief survey on different replication techniques such as Read One Write All (ROWA), Quorum Consensus (QC), Tree Quorum (TQ) Protocol, Grid Configuration (GC) Protocol, Two-Replica Distribution Techniques (TRDT), Neighbour Replica Triangular Grid (NRTG) and Neighbour Replication Distributed Techniques (NRDT). These techniques have its own redeeming features and shortcoming which forms the subject matter of this survey

    MEASURING THE MEDIATING ROLE OF TALENT MANAGEMENT, HRM AND ORGANISATIONAL SUCCESS IN UAE

    Organizations in the past have neglected talents employees, whereby researchers and HR professionals have realized the importance of talent management for the modern organizations rather than relying on the foreign expatriates to manage their human capital effectively for sustaining effectively. As such, this study aimed to measure the mediating role of talent management between HRM and organizational success relationship in the UAE aluminium industry. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from the various aluminium companies operating in UAE. For hypothesis testing, SEM was employed. The finding indicates of having a full mediation in the model. Emergence of internet technology has led to tremendous changes in organizational structure and impact on talent management towards organizational success. Many companies are trying in this competitive market to be successful on their product offerings by given the customer with best possible experiences. As a result, managers, and CEOs are concerned about taking the right direction to introduce new trainings to manage their talented employees. Nonetheless, this study is more concerned about HRM and talent management towards organizational success from the UAE aluminium industry perspective. Conversely, to be successful in this competitive market, all companies must care about their employees.

    Organizations in the past have neglected talents employees. Alongside, the role of human resources has been limited to attract and train the staff. Therefore, this study discusses the relationship between HRM and talent management towards organisational success in the UAE aluminium industry context. For this study, data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from the various aluminium companies operating in UAE. The respondents for this study were the employees working at various aluminium companies in UAE. A random sampling method was used to select the samples for this study. A self-administered questionnaire was developed basing on the literature review. However, few items were also be adapted from the existing scales on HRM, Organisational success and talent management. After adapting, all the items were modified according to the study requirements to make those fit for UAE context. The respondents were chosen from the different companies randomly. Prior to that, the respondents were asked their willingness to participate in this survey and only those who voluntarily agreed were given the questionnaire. The study findings show that there is a strong relationship between HRM and talent management towards organizational success in the UAE aluminium industry context. The potential implications and recommendations of this study are discussed from methodological, empirical, and practical standpoints.

    Dynamic response of tapered optical fiber coated with graphene oxide for detecting aqueous ethanol

    Typically, evanescent-field optical fiber sensors utilize tapered fiber structure to enhance the evanescent filed interaction with the sensing medium. A nanostructured sensing layer is applied to further enhance the sensitivity of the sensor. This paper investigates the use of tapered fiber sensor coated with graphene oxide (GO) nano-film. Optimization of the GO layer and the tapering parameters were performed and the sensing capability of the device is tested using different concentrations of ethanol. The sensor demonstrates fast response and recovery to aqueous ethanol when interrogated in the visible region using a spectrometer and light source which is 20 seconds and 30 seconds respectively

    Current Status Regarding Tumour Progression, Surveillance, Diagnosis, Staging, and Treatment Of HCC: A Literature Review

    Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignant tumour of the liver, and is globally considered to be a major causes of cancer-associated mortality. The early diagnosis of HCC improves overall survival through the application of suitable treatment options. This article presents some of the techniques for the surveillance of HCC like ultrasonography and the use of tumour biomarkers such as α-fetoprotein (AFP), DesGamma-Carboxy Prothrombin (DCP) and others. Included in the discussion will be diagnostic methods like computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), contrast enhancement ultrasound (CEUS), and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography hybrid with computed tomography (FDG PET/CT). Current molecular pathogenesis related to HCC and the molecular steps that determine the transition from benign to malignancy are also analysed. The HCC stages which depends on the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) algorithm are also discussed. Finally, this review article discusses the present therapeutic and treatment options for HCC such as resection, transplantation, or ablation used to treat early stage cancer. Also included will be trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and Sorafenib for patients with intermediate and advanced-stage cancer, respectively

    Silvicultural prescriptions for second growth forests: a case study in Tekam F.R..

    Introduction of mechanized harvesting to inland dipterocarp forest can alter the size, structure, species composition, spatial distribution, stocking level of the pristine rainforest towards a more heterogeneous residual stands. The assessment of second growth forest at landscape level using satellite imagery allows us to examine the variation of stand condition over a large area, and development of a strategic planning to support sustainable management. In developing the silvicultural prescriptions, we looked into three key components of forest stand and used them as the basis to decide on the appropriate silvicultural option. Our assessment approach began with classifying the forest stands into eight commercial species groups. Using a stand projection model we simulated the stand stocking, structure and composition up to 120 years. More than thirty (30) cutting options with minimum dbh limit of 45 cm and 50 cm for non-dipterocarp and dipterocarps, respectively were applied on the simulated stand at each 5 years time step. A growing stock assessment was carried out using minimum stocking standards such as residual stand density, net commercial volume, and proportion of dipterocarps. The silvicultural decision made is not only taking into account the current status of the growing stock but also the projected future stand condition. The paper presents the outcome of the growing stock assessment and recommends silvicultural options to enhance the growing stock of second growth production forest
